Biography

Konstantin Kölmel is a new face in jazz music in Germany. The jazz drummer from Baden -Baden forms the "Konstantin Kölmel Trio" with his equally talented colleagues, Justin Zitt (piano) and Jakob Bänsch (trumpet). The musicians are young students of jazz at the Musikhochschule Stuttgart and former members of the support program "Jazz-Juniors" of the state of Baden Württemberg. They have concert and competition experience (trumpeter Jakob Bänsch was, among other things, a national prize winner at Jugend musiziert and winner of the Lions Jazz Award). Gallet and Bänsch, by the way, are members of the Bundesjazzorchester. Zitt studies in Mannheim at the Musikhochschule.

This young, brilliant jazz formation plays modern jazz titles from Till Brönner and Thomas Siffling to Miles Davis and fusion jazz from Snarky Puppy, Herbie Hancock and Roy Hargrove. However, the program focuses on the band's own compositions.

The new album project "Hybrid" is a mixture of modern jazz music with other musical styles. For this Kölmel extended the trio for some pieces with two guest musicians. The idea of the project is to mix different musical influences from jazz, funk and world music into a modern hybrid. In addition to this blending of musical genres, known as fusion jazz, Konstantin Kölmel also explores new hybrid paths in other areas. Thus the instrumentation on the album varies from the unusual trio form with trumpet, drums and piano, to the quartet and quintet with saxophone and bass. The instrumentation also changes from the Arabic Darabuka drum and grand piano to rocking drums and a trumpet that is alienated by synthesizers.

On a compositional level, Konstantin Kölmel also forms a hybrid with his pianist Justin Zitt. The two young composers use digital media not only as a means of composition, but also for the exchange of musical ideas. Despite spatial distance, it is thus possible to work creatively together and to obtain interesting results in a short time.

For the recording of the first solo album, Kölmel chose the well-known studio "kleine Audiowelt" in Sandhausen. Markus Born, one of the most experienced sound engineers in Germany, who has worked with legends such as Paul Kuhn, Joo Kraus, Thomas Siffling and Xavier Naidoo, enthusiastically accompanied the project of the young jazz musicians.

The band was able to gain ample concert experience at performances at the Kurhaus in Baden-Baden, at the Kulturwinter of the city of Rastatt, the Jazz Festival in Sinzheim and at the award ceremony of the Landesnaturschutzpreis BW in the new castle in Stuttgart. For their release tour, performances are planned throughout Baden-Württemberg in jazz clubs such as the Hemingway Lounge Karlsruhe, the Kurhaus Baden-Baden, as well as the renowned Schloss Kapfenburg.
